19k? 90x90 pix on LOW quality with high compression before it looks like total junk still comes up to 22k I say you enable off site avatar linking or up it a bit :)
thats my sugestion!
I don't want to do offsite as that's too open to abuse. What size would you recommend? I wouldn't want it to be too large for the odd member that might be on dialup.

I would recommend about 32kb max. Talking about avatars I put mine up.
for the odd member that might be on dialup.
You know what i say to that? QQ n00b!!
lol seriously your on a gadget site with dial up? you deserve the slow load times dam.. But any way in all seriousness hm id push it about 10 percent more just to give us some jpeg option 22k to 25k TOPS even thats pushing it... I am still surprised you guys went to vB and not some thing sexier :)
What's better than vB (that has as many features as people here demand :P)?
Size is up to 25K.
You'd be surprised how many readers on the main site are on dialup, it must really hurt as we have a lot of big images.
What do you prefer to vB, I like it (hence the choice) as it means I can call somebody up if I have any problems :).

Nothing seems better than vB.
For Case: To get a pic smaller try using Gif instead of Jpeg. It shrinks the file size alot for me.
IMO experience and ive had a lot before i started doing the CG thing... vB well is back door city way to many ways to exploit the system and very heavy on the back end hence why i don't like it. The code is just messy and lacks certain admin features id have to add my self or install making upgrades a pain. But it does handle large forums very well a good example of this is Hardforum they have 1323 (397 members and 926 guests) while im writing this post on at once and a total of 66,751 members now thats a lot. So yes VB can handle it its handling their Threads: 368,366, Posts: 4,167,66 but they disable lots of functions to keep the overhead down.
So what do i like better? IPB http://www.invisionpower.com/ip.dynamic/products/board/index.html
Has all the same features VB has and than some. The admin tools are amazing. It makes life easier in the long run and they actually have a few vB themes so you cant even tell the difference. There are tons of commercial sites and fan sites and zones and blogs that use this that are just as large as HardForum but it is not as well known as vB so people tend to gravitate towards vB. Dotn get me wrong there is still instances were id avoid vB and even when id purposely use it my self.
I've admin-ed IPB a little bit in the past and did like it. I've just found vB more stable for the sites I run and with the latest version (3.6) it's really good to write plug-ins for and update. I reckon they've sorted the security issues now and when new vulnerabilities are discovered (as they inevitably will be) they are quick to release updates.
I'm not going to get into a forum software argument on our first official day of opening though, it is our Birthday after all :)

Well you know what my real major reason i have a hate for them right now? the guys who "liberated" thier vB ileagaly recoded it a bit and state clearly its not secure. vB is offering thier version for payign customers now... and vB does not tell thier customers anything about it.. it makes me angry -_-

Not a fan of gifs with images that have more than 256 colors it crippels them... hence why jpeg is a eveil nesessity

My avatar has more than 256 colors... and it's doesn't look any different from a jpg converted over...
It depends greatly on the image
