It is now absolutely must for our daily life. Depending on which country one lives in, computers are now almost an essential household need. The primary reason being inforamtion gathering. Most people either keep their personal records or do some office work in home or required for the kids or for some daily informations in the net or being in touch with friends all over the world.

For me, I don't believe computers is a NEED, but they are a Want. These days, to improve the technology, almost everything is very dependent on computers; providing those simulations and control to all the mechanical systems, gaming systems, electronic, bio-science, and more......
The dependent on computers ranging from home-users playing Counter-Strike to a professional running NASA simulation to ensure precise calculations of the trajectory for the rocket.
Slowly, day by day, computers have started to creep into our human lives, unknowingly to the human sense.
One of the way to really know if you are a PC- addict is to give a small calculation: How many hours of the day are you staring onto the computer screen.
Take x hours, and divide by 24, times 100.
100x/24 = y%
Image y% of your life is being sucked into the cyberspace. Do you have social life? True "physical" social life?

I have no social life. I know that I must walk, I must meet and greet people. Go out for movies or go for a dinner in the restaurant. But no I can't. Whenever I get ready for going out I feel I will be missing something in the PC. I know I must change and have some percent of social life in that 100%.

My social life is online at this point. I have friends all over the world i talk and speak with through the pc. Heck i met my husband in cyberspace. I cant complain.

Wow... not me.
As much as I love the 'net and computers (both hardwares and games), I do my best not to let it run my life. OH, and I have a family and kids to take care of as well... so I try to take them out to places and such as much as possible.

I have a friend who doesn't have a computer, and I don't know how he survives. My life is practically ruled by my computer. There's the internet and email, of course. But whenever I want to listen to music, I use my computer to play it. My favourite television programs are all programmed into my computer and I generally watch them as I read my emails. I can't imagine life without my computer.

For me, the comp is a tool - it's the internet that I miss simply because it's such an incredible knowledge pool.
For example, I was on vacation one year and a tourist shop had "gel candles". I wondered how these were made and knew that if I could access the internet, it would take 30 seconds to research and learn. However, being on a small island and not having any kind of computer, I had to suck it up. But, as soon as I got to a computer, sure enough, I knew how gel candles were made in less than 30 seconds.
So, as much as I love hardware and tech in general, IMO, a Winbloze class machine is more of a "black box" tool that is used for other purposes such as doing research. In the C64 days, I loved the computer for the sake of tech, memory maps, registers, peek, poke, sys, and all. But today, things are so commoditized and over-complicated, it's just a tool to accomplish other tasks IMO.

Same with me i have all my music and almost all home entertainment tied into the pc. Thats not to say if the internet went down i couldnt function without it but at the moment i have used it as a canvas. I hope to one day see a cell phone turn into a pc/ipod/tracker for all people.

I love having my computer. I would like to say it is just a want but having one child in school there has already been projects that he has needed the computer for. One of them was a site that corresponded with learning to read and the lessons that were done in school. Which I thought was weird because I'm sure not everyone has a computer but no one seem to have a problem with it.

Interesting topic...
I was watching some program about electromagnetic bombs that have the abilitity to permanently destroy the circuitry of electrical devices, and how these types of weapons are being developed.
Much of the program revolved around the idea of how crippling this would be, and most of the people interviewed seemed to agree that it would lead to total chaos because of our dependancy on machines.
Think about every communication system going *down* all at the same time.
Including computers, phones, heating appliances, transportation...it would affect every aspect of every person's life and everything would basically come to a standstill...
kind of reminds me why we're taught long division, and THEN let we get to use calculators...

I know... I got all my kids' pictures and home movies on my computer... and to think of losing it all at once... is quite saddening... :( Time for good ol' fashioned printed picture backups!! :D

While a number of people would say "sure, I could live without a computer", my guess is some of those people don't realize how reliant various "normal" activities are on computer behind the scenes.

I would die without my computer. It is sooo vital in my life, I am always checking up facts and looking up actors in my shows and I am a freelance writer so without my computer I would literally starve as well.

I'm completely addicted to my computer. In fact, I don't know how I'd survive without being able to use it for at least 4 hours a day.
It definitely has made society more productive in various ways.

More insulated too though, which is the main drawback I suppose
It definitely has made society more productive in various ways.
I agree with this. Can anybody imagine the society without computers?
It would be like a comeback to primitive ages

most of my recent work has involved an online component
found my wife online (match.com)
found the last three apartments I rented online
found our house online
computers and the web more specifically is really important in my life. I was just thinking the other night how wrecked my world would be if something happened and the Internet went down.

All those are a daily requiremnet which computers are useful. It is also good for children as they are growing.. they can learn alot using computer. I believe that computers are something that we need and something we want. My work totally revolves around the computer and teaching other people how to use the computer. In my own time I am constantly reading technology blogs to see what is new. So for me the computer is a necessity for work but not necessarily something that I need for after work. I love the computer but if I had to do without it at home then my life wouldn't end.
