This device has been in the works for a couple of years, and I finally saw a production model in June of 06 at a national educational technology conference. (There is a updated version coming out later this year:

This mini DLP projector contains LEDs and has a "bulb" life of 10,000 hours. There is an optional battery back available, and it is for sale now in the $650 range. Instant on, instant off, no heat, and a short-distance throw!
