I have an RCA Lyra 512mb mp3 player, and thought the display isn't the highest quality, i think it should be possible to create scrolling messages on it. This would probably me more proof-of-concept then anything else, but it would be pretty cool.

Edit: I'm posting this because i've never seen any hacks on "low end" or "low cost" mp3 players, and thought it would be cool to be the first one. If anyone has any idea how to do this, please reply to this post.

They are not worth it.... It's usually beter to buy a common character lcd. You can even find them for about 3 bucks on ebay.

Just as a suggestion check the "Fun with LCDs" thread. I t has a very nice LCD in there.

I did; my point was that this would be a very low-cost hack that alot of people wouldn't have to buy anything for. Thank's anyway tho.

It varies; you can get anywhere from 128-512mb versions. Mine (the half gig) costs 80-100 $cdn but quite a few people already have these. For my screen modding things, tho, i'm moving on to the gameboy thing i've posted in Fun with LCD's. And no, i'm afraid i'm keeping the screen for now.

I feared that :)
I would suggest playing first with a character lcd. A standar HD44780 (IIRC) 2x8 LCD should be very eazy to use. Then, change to a small graphical one.
Once you are able to draw a self-portrait :) in the graphical LCD then start playing with your gameboy LCD.
Hope my advice may help you.
Any questions you know where to find me. :P

Ah, I live next to a very good source of cheap gameboys and GBC's, I may be able to mail one to anyone if they need, but I don't know how much mailing would cost.

Lol, old thread.... i've since given up on LCDs, seeing as i can't make them work with my computer. I re-did the wiring a few times, and the test pattern says it works, but it still won't work. Weird thing is, the backlight will flicker when text is supposed to be scrolling, but my wiring appears to be fine. So, i'm concluding that it's probably software-caused, and i'll try LCDs again when i get a new machine.
