View Full Version : What is the best Anti-Virus program?

What is the best Anti-Virus program to use? I use Norton Internet Security 2006. It works good for me, "No Viruses to date". But it seems to slow my system up and it's kind of expensive. What program do the rest of you use? I'm cheap, but, I don't want to sacrifice security. Any good free programs out there that you use that are just as good? I also use Spybot S&D, Pest Patrol and Windows Defender. Just curious what you think.

I am using EZ anti virus from CA and I have had no viruses and trojans so far. I also use Spybot S&D and ofcourse zone alarm.

AVG free edition for me, I have used it for years and installed/recommended it to loads of people. Most people that switch from Norton love the way their computer starts to work...faster.........!

I use active virus shield, its powered by AOL but free all you have to do is give them your email address, and it seems to work fairly well.

It's bad to ask what anti virus is best... it's more like preference thing than the actual "quality". I use Norton Internet Security not so much becuase of the quality but more because I'm used to it. However the bad side is that it does slow down computer as it is memmory hungry but on the other hand it does its job great. So Norton is the solution for me... and it aint that expensive either.
I'm at McAfee VirusScan man, purely because that's what came from work (site license and all that you know)

I used to use Nortan Antivirus but it used to eat a lot of my PC's Resources, so i tried Zonealarm, Panda and many more, but now iam currently using
eZ eTrust Antivirus by Microsoft{i think}
and i also support this with Microsoft Antispyware which is currently known as Windefender :)
nod32 is better, bitdefender is also good

I rarely use windows, but when i do i have Avast installed, my system has never contracted a virus of any kind, to my knowledge. Then again, maybe i use "the least used protection system in the world."

For those of you running Norton, any of you guys have up to 1 gig of ram? I mean as memory goes up with that be an issue later on?
some_stupid_nut
08-21-2006, 02:27 AM
I use AVG Free. Probably not the best, but it hardly uses any system resources and its FREE!
rocky2083
08-21-2006, 02:36 AM
I have 1gig of ram... Norton still clogs alot of memmory up.... which is really the badest side of it... but with 1gb you can run other things pretty much like Norton is not even there... however when you check the memmory consumption you see its still (in comparance with other Antivirus programs) huge.

I think the best antivirus software is trend micro by far! Also, according to the latest issue (sept 2007) of Consumer Reports Magazine, the best internet security suite is Trend Micro Internet Security 2007. As the magazine puts it, the product "offers fairly inexpensive all-around protection". Here's the complete list from that article:
1. Trend Micro ('PC-cillin') Internet Security 2007 (now referred to as "Trend Micro Internet Security 2007") (http://www.trendmicro.com)
2. Check Point ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.0
3. McAfee Total Protection 2007
4. McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007
5. Microsoft Live OneCare
6. BitDefender Internet Security 10
7. F-Secure Internet Security 2007
8. Symantec Norton 360
9. Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007

After a long time, I have been losing track of what's the best anti-virus software in the market. As far as I know, Norton AV is still quite good, but probably not the best.... But its enterprise version would still be considered quite good than end-users one.

According to the Virus Bulletin (http://www.techpin.com/bitdefender-wins-vb100-certification-kav-fails-the-tests/) my Kasperski lost the VB100 certification :P .
BitDefender won. I don't like BitDefender.

For windows 3.1: F-Prot
For Windows 9x/2000: Stick with Mcafee or Norton Antivirus.
But for the part about having a disk to detect viri. Check out F-Prot and F-Macro. These will give you great detection.

I am using McAfee VirusScan. Few years back, I trusted Norton Antivirus but it always let me down. It doesn't detect any virus until I try to open it let alone clean them. With McAfee, it detects viruses just when I copy it, not when I try to run it. I feel safe using McAfee now.
My previous company used Norton Antivirus and it usually prompts that something has been detected but unable to clean. So, what's the purpose of having the prompt message and not able to clean the file?

I have noticed this question about best antivirus product on a lot of technology related forums recently. I recently moved over from my subscription based solution to a free solution from drivesentry. Drivesentry provides what is known as zero-day protection. It had great reveiws on a security forum and I have not had a problem yet. Does anyone else use it?

I have been using Nortan anti virus. It works good.
Another user of AVG free edition on a few laptops, so far so good. Except for an annoying popup when it updates the database.

Well, you can't really know which one is the best, when no one has tried them all.
I had Nod32, and thought it was great, but after installed Kaspersky Antivirus after, I found plenty of viruses.

For a casual user who doesn't go looking for warez, cracks and pr0n, AVG Free is good enough. Of course, if you're in an enterprise setting that changes the whole equation...

"Best" just really depend on your preferences. I prefer the lightweight clients such as AVG or even Trend-Micro's PC-Cillin, even though their protection is not as robust. If there is one thing that I've seen kill a computer's performance the most, it would be a bloated AV app like Norton or Mcafee, that just try to do too much all at once. They offer decent protection, but at the cost of using too many resources, IMHO. Also, a good spyware app is also essential for a non-savvy user. I think Webroot Spysweeper is awesome, but it has the same "bloatware" issues as Norton and Mcafee and really kills performance. I tend to use it for one off removals (using the free 15 day trial period),
