View Full Version : Many Connection Time Outs

I get a lot of these here on CGF (more than 15 times today) - predominantly on the New Posts link:

The connection has timed out

The server at forums.coolest-gadgets.com is taking too long to respond.

Also, on the main site I often get time outs when posting comments. Don't get any of this anywhere else consistantly but here so I'm speculating it may be CG specific.

Is anyone else getting this as well? If so, perhaps the server's httpd.conf file needs tweaking? Could also be DNS.

Am I the only unlucky one?

I have had some big problems with the server doing odd things and don't really know where to look. I find now if it starts acting odd I restart httpd. Any ideas what I could tweak?

I'll have a poke around with some DNS tools but I'm only a Server Admin n00b myself. I think there are some php.ini and httpd.conf settings to do with script execution times. If you have access to them, you might want to read those two files, they normally have a lot of comments in them explaining each function.

What a great quote.

Well, comparing the various reports on DP and CG forums from dnsstuff.com and then dnsreport.com seem to indicate that there may be a problem with your zone file not having a CNAME record for the domain:

http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=forums.coolest-gadgets.com

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/lookup.ch?name=forums.coolest-gadgets.com&type=CNAME

You may want to ask your host about the specifics of that.

I did ask the host about DNS when I was having problems before on the main site and they said all was fine (and pointed me at DNS report). It does seem odd that you're seeing problems and I'm not now (not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing), comments have slowed down a lot recently which could be indicative of a problem. Oddities only started happening after moving to a dedicated

There will be some DNS/SysAdmin guru's on DP probably, give them a shot.

I never got any problem here and thats the reason i asked Al about the Servers where this is hosted as they rock.
May be i was sleeping when you got the problem :p

I've only been here 20 minutes today and thus far had the same issues again at least 5 times.

Also look how the traceroute (at least from here in London) end in 'Destination Unreachable': http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/tracert.ch?ip=forums.coolest-gadgets.com

There's definitely something up with the DNS.
