I have like 200 projects going on right now literally and well just have not been on making many posts…

But in the midterm between waiting for things to render (3d) or compile, materials to set, dry whatever I have been goofing off with organic sculpture experiments on the CNC Plasma cutter.

And just cut this very interesting psychedelic pattern here:

I kind of want to make it spin similar to a video/film project an artist did once before but I may do some thing with led’s making it one big touch receptor, I intend to treat the steel by giving it a sanding job after I cleanup the edges on the grinder, than polish it up just a bit than hit it with a Patina processes called ultra black. Than treat the surface with a matt acrylic so it wont rust. This I can mount qprox sensors to use the rings as touch sensitive switches. It will stand 2in off the wall and its currently about 2ft dia.

There’s 2 others I dont have pics up because its only half cut due to the fact I keep making too much smoke on the CNC we need better ventilation, and setting off the fire alarm and the Fire Department showing up 12 times a week thanx to me :)

Soon as I get them cut ill show you all pictures. I intend to mount peltiers/TEC’s to make them cold/hot to the touch .

It is also a tad crooked atm but its just on the wall for me to work with and keep out of the way for now. some times you need to stand back from some thing to get a idea of what it will look like before you move to the next step.

I have actually been to a CNC manufacturing plant, and see how CNC machines work.

But nothing of that sort that is mounted on the wall :P hehehe....

We have a CNC plasma in our metal shop the Touchmate nothing too special and we are getting a Shopbot and a cnc mill is on its way as well... The peice im working on now is multible layyers that stands off the wall from 1 to 5in and spance 3.5ft area thats the one that will be cold to the touch.

Maybe a daft question but can you use it to create 3D sculptures like:

The plasma no you can, a Plasma cutter is just this device that electric arc through a gas that is passing through a constricted opening. The gas can be shop air, nitrogen, argon, oxygen. etc. This elevates the temperature of the gas to the point that it enters a 4th state of matter. We all are familiar with the first three: ie, solid, liquid, and gas. Scientists call this additional state plasma.

Long story short that plasma arc heats the metal instantly to a temp so high it just melts away.

The 3 Axis shopbot although we are getting can do 3 dimensional cuts because it moves a router in 3 axis X, Y, and Z. http://www.shopbottools.com

The ShopBot only has a 6in I believe it is? Work area in height but the surface area is 48” x48 “ big work area the mill on the other hand we are getting has a small work area I believe its 2ft squared but the height will go to 2 ft as well… Its all about the right tool for the job..

I can make put a copper circuit board in here for it to mill out instead of etching and it will only mill off the thin layer of copper making a full circuit board.. Change the bits and than it will even make the holes!

Besides 3 axis CNC systems (up down left right in a sense) they make 5 axis mills
http://www.shopbottools.com/videos/5axis_v3%20017.mpg

Because on a 3 axis you can really only get 3 sides of a object 5 axis... well thats a bit different :)

There is a neat video here of the shopbot cutting some flat panels but they have two tools hooked up at once on this system notice it does the cuts than makes all the holes to the proper depth http://www.shopbottools.com/videos/PRTalphaCabDrill.wmv

think of it like a giant printer :)

the above was cut on a shopbot below

Well our Plasma cutter is all most back online. We had to stop use of it because we kept setting off the fire alarm next store 2 floors up causing the fire department to show up maybe 4 times a week for 6 weeks. So we built a custom exhaust hose that stays with the tip of the plasma cutter sucking the smoke up into the exhaust system... Soon as its tested and back online i will get to posting more pictures :)
