This is kind of cool, a bit of software that generates jokes that young kids would make up. My daughter Ali has an absolutely wicked sense of humor and this reminds of some of the classics she used to come out with.
Ali: Whats got 4 wheels and can't move?
Me: I don't know what has got 4 wheels and can't move
Ali: An upside down green car
Me: Why green?
Ali: It just is.

Hey, that's actually pretty cool. Better than some of the jokes I've heard lately. I wonder how long it took to write that program?

I think the next thing that they should strive for is a computer program that can write Shakespeare-type plays and sonnets.

What's brown and sticky..... a stick.
How many boring people does it take to change a lightbulb? One.

Good one, they say the system is designed for use by children who must communicate via a computer and voice synthesizer. They must normally select from a preset list of words and phrases, which can limit the scope of a conversation. The system uses a database of word definitions, sounds and syntax to generate simple play-on-words jokes, or puns, on a chosen subject.

An audio clip provides an example of one of the machine's jokes (http://media.newscientist.com/data/images/ns/av/dn9824A1.mp3) (mp3, 170KB).
