Now that I've been writing for CG, I find myself reading more and more gadget sites. I tried using some of the web based ones (bloglines, reader) but I'd really prefer a desktop client.

I'd love any suggestions you guys have for a good RSS reader for Windows that's free.

Thanks. :)

This gives me a good idea to search for a RSS Reader to blog about in SoftSift (http://www.softsift.com).

I just never saw a point of using a application... if you want to read a headline its going to open a browser any way... Thats why i love googles front page.

I am all ready in my browser

Thanks, FeedReader looks good, I think I'll try that. :)

Case, I've tried the web ones, just don't like them. I'm not a fan of IG, either, you've got to be logged in all the time and it makes Google load slower. :p

It's just logical, adding all the IG stuff adds a lot of HTML, hence more data to download before it loads.

It's not slow or anything, but it's slower than the regular home page. :p

Maybe he just likes a fast homepage :P Like about:blank.

There's nothing faster than that :P

Use your email client. Thunderbird has great RSS support.

I've never find a desktop RSS reader that I've been happy with, I also use a lot of different machines so for me a web based solution is the only answer. Some what boringly I use Blog lines.

I'm generally on this machine, so desktop isn't much of an issue for me.

My E-Mail client is Gmail, web clips aren't good enough. :P Maybe if Reader was more integrated with Gmail I'd use it, but that's another story.

Funnily, my homepage is Yahoo!. :D

I've tried Opera, but just prefer Firefox, and a RSS reader wouldn't change that. :P

Google Desktop. . . another thing to clutter up my computer. I don't have anything I really need to search for, and that's the only reason I'd ever use it.

I'm really liking FeedReader 3, it's fast, simple, and elegant.

You dont have to use the search functions of google desktop and jsut use it as a application to display data such as RSS feeds...

ZapTXT

How about ZapTXT (http://www.zaptxt.com) as an alternative?

You can enter a feed or select a feed for say Coolest-Gagdets.com, filter headlines by keywords if you wish, and elect to receive real time alerts via Instant Messenger, e-Mail or TXT message (rss coming soon).

Cheers

I use RSS Bandit (http://www.rssbandit.org/) (free). It's Winbloze only but works pretty well, at least for my style. I use the upload/download feature to keep my feeds list consistent among all of my machines at home and work.

There is an occasional problem with feedburner links where things get mixed-up, but it happens rarely enough that I'm able to use RSS Bandit to screw-off at work many hours everyday :D

Ctrl-Q to mark all as read. You can slam through dozens of sites in minutes very easily. I'm hoping they bust a new update soon - it's been a while...
