ok folks, I am looking for a new camera as my current one is crap.

I don't want a camera phone! just a digital camera that I can plug into my computer and browse it like any extra storage device, the main problem with my ickle camera just now is that there is no view finder for looking through, only a small screen which just sucks the batteries dry in what seems like minutes when I use it.

So a small camera that lasts and doesn't eat up batteries, maybe optional screen that you can turn off, any suggestions?

Try one of the cannon powershots (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategoryid=113)it is good and all your requirements are met. I have been succesfully using A 510 for 1 year.

You can get many models at really affordable prices if you go to www.dealsea.com and they are all really good, easy to use, high quality, and full of many capabilities.

I'm a big fan of the Kodak Easyshare range. If you're no a self-proclaimed photographer but just want to point and shoot memorable moments or to dump stuff on eBay, they are very nice indeed. All of them have view finders AFAIK and the latest models are nice and compact and shoot great quality video as well.

I assume you mean Nikon. My wife has one of the Nikon 4Megapixel swivel cams. The thing I don't like about it is the User Interface. Granted they make great quality cams, but I still feel when you compare the price/quality/ease of Canon against Sony, Nikon, etc. Canon just makes the most practical sense.

I have a Canon PowerShot A620 and I love it. My wife is not a gadget person and she has no problem using it. You can get some good deals on them by shopping around. It's 7.1 MP, uses SD cards, I have a 1 GB in mine and depending on what setting you have it on you can take 1000's of pics. Pict Bridge, 20 shooting modes, 4x zoom, plus you can buy different lenses for it if you want. Takes 4 AA batteries and they seem to last and last. I don't take hundreds of pictures at a time but I have never had the batteries die on me. I bought an Ultra Rapid Charger for $20 and it came with 4 AA batteries. I charge them up every once and a while and have had no problems to date. Although I would suggest investing in a second set of batts though if you were to go on vacation just so you wouldn't have to worry. Enough ranting :p

I use a Canon S500. It's a great camera. I Think they have a newer version of it now.. But it's 5MP. I don't need that much detail on my pictures since most of the time I just shrink the pictures anyway...

i really like my kodak easyshare cx3700. it takes good pictures at 3.2 megapixels, if you get rechargable batteries it can take many pictures on one set of batteries, and it has a screen which you can view your pictures and delete them the only con i see in it is that it requires a odd USB cable to transfer the photos if you dont have a memory card reader (the cable is included with the camera) and the camera is about 99 dollars when i last saw it.

Canon... Im a avid hobbiest photographer grew up on film and went to digital.

see this depends on your needs if you want a nice well rounded SLR go get a Canon 20d you wont regret it... If you want a small camera you can pocket and take every were.. Any Canon ELPH will make you happy. The MP of the camera will depend on how badly you want to make large prints... If you want to make good prints than id say 5mp or learger for anythign above your normal size prints other wise 3mp is fine.

Thanks for the suggestions, on a sidenote I went to Blairdrummond Safari park today and had to dig out the old old camera and put a spool in it + batteries! During the day a big old lion walked right past the front bonnet of my car and we got some great pics.

Upon getting home my son Sean asked to see the pictures :( ahh, they just don't know how it was in the crap ol' days :D

Yea I know this is an old post but I just found this forum :D I recently bought a Casio Exilim EX-S880 and absolutely love it. The picture quality is great, even in low lighting, and it takes surprisingly good video clips.

My vote goes to my Nokia E71. Well, it does not have a fantastic feature like a real digital camera phone, but does take pictures for me. So it is good enough.

I have been using Sony CyberShot W130 Digital Camera for last 1 month and its a great small smart does all you need. If you are thinkig of buying one you will need a 4 gig stick for it that will get you 1250 pics set at 8 mega pix. And also a spare battery np-fg1i is the model number and it will also tell you how long is left in mins

Everyone in my family owns Canon Powershots - and they're awesome. We recommend them to everyone.
