Just thought id share my experience with EVDO and Verizion Wireless

So wow I have a EVDO PDA Phone with its super fast OMG WTF speed…. Or did I just get jipped? Well See I hear great things about EVDO and what it has the potential of doing but what is its real world use?

Well I have had a Treo 600 Since the day it was released from Handspring and in fact it still runs perfectly, It does not even have a PALM Logo but the original Handspring logo before palm bought the company. I used the thing every day a non stop must have tool. You see I also needed mobile data for my laptop, So using PalmNET from June Fabrics ( I don’t know whats up with the company name wither I mean wtf? Do you sell fabrics or some thing?). this program allowed me to use my treo 600 as a modem for internet use and speed was good and solid all most never less than a 128k ISDN line (dual channel) ran great for what it was and latency was good. So now the 700p comes out and its about time for a upgrade.

So I have had my 700p Since release for Verizion and well Verizion is well verizion I have my opinions of them but that’s another story for a different thread. But any way I am paying trough the teeth for service + unlimited data that is well not truly unlimited. See to use your Treo phone with EVDO service as a tethered modem as I mentioned above they want to charge you extra 15 bucks a month on top of your all ready 25 a month unlimited data plan that only covers unlimited data used by only Palm phone applications. So you can download, IRC, Chat what ever all your want as long as it’s a application on the phone. If you download and use their tethered application that is buggy, has a memory leak, and seriously bogs my laptop down, it wont let you on because it checks your service plan before hand.

But I have a way around this! But ill elaborate more in a moment.

So lets get into speeds… Ok on the phone using DSLReports Text based speed test for mobile devices the the phone will peak under best possible conditions at 200kbps down and about 20kbps up and that’s really good IMO its like a low grade DSL modem in your pocket… Don’t get too excited yet because theres lots of bad news…. Any way surfing times are good some web pages load slower than others only because they take longer to reformat for the palm screen. I use upIRC for all my IRCing and I have a neat app I use for AIM/Messenger/ICQ/Google Chat that is all ways on even when im on the phone just so I can BS all I want :) speed is excellent and very responsive over EVDO. So why not try tethered but god dammit to hell if im going to pay 15 bucks more on my all ready outrageous bill..

Enter pdaNet for the 700p… Junefabrics has released a new version of the PdaNET software for the 700p that guess what bypasses verizions tethered security. See VZW way of being tehthered is well rather simple you install their software that does not use the original preprogrammed way of using the treo as a DUN device that palm built but their own buggy badly programmed software. Ok so I went and got my hands on the latest version of PdaNET right away and installed.. Now going trough my mind while im anxiously downloading the installer is.. Omg mobile DSL I can game and have a wireless DSL to hell with hacking WEB on wireless access points this is going to rock out.

So I get it installed sync my PDA and get the Palm app on my phone with little to no setup or configuration at all because it just don’t need it… in about 5 minutes time I am online.

Wow google is loading slow wtf is this shit…. DSL Reports.. ok bottom line it sucks big time.. PEAK burst speeds I will hit 200k down but on average im lucky to break 60k under absolute best conditions in 1 out of 5 try’s while the other 4 tries im looking at more like 20k to 30k. So at this point going trough my mind is that some things just not right here I mean wtf? Why the speed difference. Well I decide to do ping tests… seems that the latency is extremely high in all most all cases no matter where the host is im pinging. Transfer times can peak out fairly high but again latency is all ways high so there goes any laptop mobile gaming.

So I gave Junefabrics a email and said that well there’s a possibility that their software is not optimized for the network. So now im going to give the VZW version a try and see what happens because I think they are routing my data funny doing it this way because after doing a traceroute it seems even though I am in NYC on the east coast my data all ways routes out of the middle of the country to go any where no matter what.

So ill update this thread as soon as I try Verizions software.
