Hi all,

I don't know if this is the right place to ask. I'm looking to restore my 1968 VW Beetle. Maybe even just so that I can fix the transmission so I can get it to a VW mechanic.

Do any of you have suggestions on books/websites that give you the basics of fixing a VW?

You can't go far wrong with the trusty Haines manual (http://www.repairmanual.com/catalog/H96040), you'l probably find one on eBay (http://search.ebay.co.uk/vw-haynes)

There also a restoration book on Amazon which looks appropriate http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transporter-Restoration-Manual-Haynes-Manuals/dp/1859606156

Thanks for the reply guys, I'll check out those resources.

I haven't worked on a car since high school and it would break my heart to have to sell it.

Thanks again!

Once you do it up maybe you could enter the VW Nepal Rally (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/5352482.stm) (it just coincidentally came up on my Google sidebar :))

Hey Case

I'm a chick  And yes I like cars, don't know as much as I would like to though :( Belive me its always been hard to get a guy to teach me more than just changing a tire.

I took mechanics in High School (which wasn't too long ago) so feel I can work on the VW. But I've got get this poor thing running before I can think of pimping it out...

dont let it hang over you that your a women... specialy if ur hawt... im telling u hawt women who work on cars that know what they are doing just drive guys nuts :)

but any way VW's are so easy to work on from the old vans to the beetles they are extreemly modular so its a good car to choose to play with... On the monster garage on discovery they did a sweet VW mod

with the new engine they were getting 9 second passes... there are some pictures from that episode here. (http://www.oceanstreetvideo.com/vwshow/jessejames.html)

If i had my own shop or a place to store and work on a car id totaly look for a decent shape VW Van hehe... but the frame and what not to the VW is just so great for moddign all the cutom weird cars of its day are based off the VW's... look at the beast of a engine in this one...

Well I'd say about 90% of my VW's parts were origional when I got it. So far the work I've done is (with help from a qualified mechanic with things I couldn't do (i don't have a workshop)): replace fuel line, break cylinder, clutch cable, accelarator cable, tires, shocks & clutch fork. I've had the engine replaced with a reconed engine (I couldn't affor anything better :( ).

Oh and had the suspension lowered.

As soon as my sister returns my dig camer I'll post a photo of the VW
