Well I am getting ready to start several really large projects that will require the most soldering Ive ever done and mostly as super small sizes.

So after lots of research and hunting i decided on a WD1 based Solder station from weller. the WD1 is the station its self with is extremely flexible industrial grade solder station...

The kits come in several flavors from the WD1000M,

WD1001,

and WD1002

are the primary three. Now im purposely putting up the large product images for a reason... But more on that in ab it. the station is Micro processor controlled, they make a WD2 version that has 2 ports for 2 devices to be hooked up at the same time. The three button I, II, III, are there to have 3 preset temperatures that can be assigned for quick temp change based on what the job requires. If you really want to get crazy the unit actually has a USB interface you can use with any ISO application for any sort of calibration, configuration, or precise measured values.

Each iron or accessory that you plug in is automatically recognized, So id i was to connect a ultra fine pencil iron or a tinning tray it is detected and the corresponding control profile is loaded allowing virtually no compensation in temperatures or recalibration when a new iron is connected.

Now You will first notice that the only difference is the irons and the stand... well... why different stands? well thats the first UBER OMG WTF PWN sexy feature of this fantastic station. well these is some sort of sensor (not sure as to how this is accomplished yet, in the tools/irons and the stand. When the iron is placed into the holder it is set to a low temperature mode and starts counting how long its been sitting idle... The lower standby temp prolongs the tip life and if its in there past your predetermined idle time (IE 30 mins) it will power the iron off, the station will still be active and ON but the iron will be off. when the iron is picked back up it quickly heats back up to the temp that you have set. Very sexy feature...

Now theres also a very unique aspect of the irons unlike many other industrial ones is that the heating element is not in the tip and can be changed that allows the tips to be far cheaper for the irons than others when you have to replace them...

Any way besides soldering irons there are other tools you can hook up to this Model that incluse:

Micro 80/FE soldering pencil

WMP Micro Soldering Pencil (this is the one im buying)
MPR 80 Antistatic peritronic soldering pencil
LR 82 Soldering Iron
WTA Tweezers (desolderSMD's)
WAST Thermal wire stripper with support (Can also do flat cables and shrink)
WHP 80 Preheating plate (Used to preheat IC boards)
WSB Solder bath (use totin wire ends and clean leads of all extraneous solder particles in preparation for reworking.)
FE 80 Soldering Iron 80W/24V

So since i just ordered this baby when she arrives ill take photos and give you guys full on prognosis of it after and during use as well as setup and screen shots... this is a great by and i got it for a awesome price about 40% off retail... if any one does heavy soldering and lots of it id recommend this in a heartbeat.

Looks awesome. My current cheap digital soldering iron is taking a crap on me (LCD display is flakey, but works fine otherwise). My next one will be a fancy one like this with an ultra fine tip.

How much did you pay and (sorry if I missed it in the wide text) which model did you select?

Mike

I went with the 1001 being it comes with a very fine pencil

The WMP It will take any one of the NT series tips (http://www.cooperhandtools.com/brands/weller/index.cfm?model_list=1&att_id=WEL007&att1=Tips%20and%20Nozzles&att2=NT%20Series)

Fine tips like this is the finest ill need so the 1000m just isnt worth it... if i find my self for a need to large jobs with larger interconects ill pick up a WSP80 Iron that comes with the 2002... I just felt the smaler iron would suite me better,
