What are the best programs to use to run old ms-dos based games on an XP computer? Just wondering, I want to relive my youth and experience some nostalgia with some of these 12-yr-old games.

you can run it on command prompt.

goto run and type cmd to open the command prompt window.

You can try this (DOSbox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/)) - it's pretty popular for DOS games on modern machines

OR else you can hit properties and do it via Compatability wizard

No need for ANY external applacations to run any old DOS games or the windows compatabulity junk unless it specificaly calls for things that is no longer implamented in windows and in that case ONLY you would need DOSbox...

all of my old dos games run in my Windows XP x64 enviorment with out a hitch.

As micsaund suggest, DOSBox is the way to go, if you want to run some old games. I use it and it's EXCELLENT! Sometimes using XP's compatibility wizard does not solve the problem because of the hardware specification of the game.

Some simple commands to know

1. Install DOSBox to Windows XP

2. Run the DOSBox from Start Menu

3. Mount your game directory, assuming it's at f:\game, using the following command
mount c f:\game

4. Access C directory
c:

5. Run your batch file (.bat) which starts your DOS game

Would be better to pick up a discarded, old school PC and start reviving it...with DOS 6.22 lol

Actually, I do have an old computer at home circa approx. 1988 that runs totally on DOS mode. I learned the appropriate commands to run games when I was 3, lol. So, if I ever get that set up, that it is an awesome option.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'd heard of dosbox before, but was curious as to what my other options were. :)

lol - I remember doing a dir in the Doom (original - still have the box/floppies I mail ordered) and seeing a 10MB file!!! I couldn't believe my eyes - that was the largest file I had ever seen, by far.

Now, you are pleased to find a "lightweight" piece of software that only takes 10MB on Winbloze.

OK here is the challange for all of you DOS gurus

This is my favorite old game "GOBLLINS" that only runs on Win98. I cant make it work on XP SP2, neither with compatibility nor with compatebility wizard...

Try to make it work:
