If you follow the instructions on loading it, you shuold be fine. If you dont want to do the Linux thing, you can look into Rockbox.org for another really good firmware project.
I did it, but I kinda didn't like it... I ended up just uninstalling it and sticked to linux on the desktop :P

i tried it out on my nano for one day, it was pretty cool and had a lot of functionality. the only drawback for me was that for some reason, it just wouldn't play music. after trying for an hour, i gave up and uninstalled it. feel free to try it for yourself though, it comes with an uninstaller so if you dont like it you can easily switch back

It would not play music _smith? Talk about useless! Is it possible you had new firmware on the Nano that dissallowed that?
I wanted to try podZilla, and see how I liked it - though, I dont know anyone who had tried it, so I skipped it for the time being.

i got it on my nano succesfully however...theres always a problem with non professional stuff...if your ipod goes into deep sleep mode (if you dont touch it for 12 hrs) then all of your songs get hidden What I mean is your songs are there but your ipod is unable to recognize them, however there is a fix to that :) You download this tool called ipod wizard and unable deep sleep. But now your battery wont last as long
But linux on ipod is always a plus you can do much more with it...watch videos, gameboy emulator, doom :)
and ipod linux works with the latest firmware, it doesnt depend on the firmware for its compatibility, it depends on hardware

I've tried Ipod Linux on my Ipod Mini before. It was fine but it was a bummer that the screen wasn't color.. But I manage to try it on my friend's Ipod Nano. Also what azy891 said, it's true that if your ipod goes into a deep sleep then your ipod wouldn't be able to recognize the music anymore... That's happened to my mini and my friend's nano... (due to that we were on our laptop or pda's alot)

After a couple of months playing doom and videos on my ipod mini it fried the battery.

You mean that your battery just went dead? Or that it blew?

That was probably just a damaged battery. There is no way Doom or a video can interfere with a battery and fry it.

Maybe Mac books aren't the only (http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=15562) things with sony batteries..... lol.

Well if the battery is bad then all you need to do is go to a Best Buy, (IF on your area) and buy an ipod battery by energizer. I'm using those batteries and it works fine.

I used this to help me put it on my nano:

It was neat and all but I think I'm going to uninstall it. It was a little buggy and sometimes a bit of a pain. I don't want to uninstall it yet because I want to go to an Apple Store and ask the clerk if the Nano can play videos. They'll say no and then I'll whip out my Nano and play a video and watch as their head explodes.

That's gonna be funny but watch out though... My cousin did that with his nano and they canceled his warranty... He called later and they reset his warrant to what it should have been.

I'm thinking about video taping it. I just hope they don't already know about iPod Linux...

The thing is that if you do Ipod linux.. the video function isn't that all cool... The feature will be implemented soon but right now videos can only be played uncompressed. So that means huge videos. I can only fit one movie onto the onto the nano unless I use my cousin's which has 8gb instead of 4 but either way, I would like to also be able to listen to music.

Yeah! I was gonna film that for you. That would be pretty good to own an Apple worker...

If your gonna film it and own an apple worker you better do it soon.. cause I heard that the new 6gb and 8gb nanos will be able to play video..

If you want a list of programs that can be ran on ipod linux, check this page out.

I tried once, but never got it working on my Mini, it just seemed to crash when I tried to run it.
It was probably my fault anyway. :p

I know nothing about Linux so that thread in the other forum that I linked to really helped me out. I probably wouldn't have been able to do it on my own.
I just wonder whether I can restore back the ipod orginal system to the state before installing ipod linux onto it...???

AFAIK the Ipod linux distribution has a restore option to reinstall the original OS.
