Some countries are already switched to UMTS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Mobile_Telecommunications_System) but most users are still using GSM and CDMA.
Here are the features of UMTS
-Higher speech quality that current networks - Addition to speech traffic UMTS, together with advanced data and information services, will be a multimedia network.
- UMTS is above 2G mobile systems for its potential to support 2Mbit/s data rates.
- UMTS is a real global system, comprising both terrestrial and satellite components.
- Consistent service environment even when roaming via "Virtual Home Environment" (VHE). A person roaming from his network to other UMTS operators, user will experience a consistent set of services thus "feeling" on his home network, independent of the location or access mode (satellite or terrestrial)
UMTS is a great technology but the big question here is that will UMTS replace wifi ???
I've not heard of UTMS before  it sounds interesting for browsing but I don't see the need for clearer voice calls, then again I'm pretty tone deaf.

UMTS is a big thing in Germany atleast , companies have invested a lot for this technology.

UMTS may be better known to people as 3G. It allows stuff like streaming video, video calls, fast wireless internet and so on.
As for it replacing wifi - so not gonna happen. wifi still has greater capabilities, + more easily implementable.

Its almost the same thing while 3G is based on WCDMA but UMTS is based on GSM.

Has anyone ever tried the two to compare them? See the difference between speeds?

I believe this new network will replace wifi, slowly but surely. People will find new ways to improve it, and it being global, communication will be much easier, and maybe we wont have the need for endless wars.

Yeah, that's gonna happen. Keep dreaming. it's gonna take more than just to implement 3g communications around the globe to end the stupid need for war.

Isn't it what the current 3g enabled phones are capable of? I don't think anyone makes purely 3g phones. 3G is not as globaly used as GSM.

most ofJapan uses 3g and NTT docomo has lots of 3G only handsets.
zzz the big ballers in the states need to get off thier asses and get thier sht together... they are fighting over standards and WHY we dont have 3g yet... it makes me very mad :(

Could it be that Case is saying that there's absolutely no 3G provider in the USA? Here, in the small country of Lithuania, we've already got two of our major telephone companies who've implemented it.
Its sad best we have is spotty evdo service in only major citiy's
